Promotional Pens go the distance
Posted in: Blog, Promo Products by Nick on April 30, 2010 | No Comments
One of the great things about promotional pens is that they get around. Most people only expect their pens to be seen by the first recipients they give them to, but this usually isn’t the case. Pens exchange hands often – about 5 times on average – throughout their lifetimes. This is great news for any company that uses custom pens as brand awareness or marketing tools. As the pen makes its way around the globe, exposure to your custom imprint doubles, triples, quadruples, and so on. Read more…

Whichever business you’re in, and especially for anyone in the field of design, such as web designers, a business card can be as important as your website identity.
A business card creates a physical connection and bond between you or your business and your customers.
Just like in a website, business cards can become great interactive elements, but with the added ability to have real textures, different materials and shapes.
Here are some great examples of the creativity used in business card design, to help set them apart from the norm!

Why Your Business Needs Professional Branding and Design
Posted in: Blog, Branding & Design by Nick on August 26, 2009 | No Comments
For many small businesses, the initial lack of customers and cash flow often causes them to put off designing a logo and marketing materials professionally, at least “until they get a few clients”, or “until they get up and running.”
Often, as a cost-saving measure, many opt for creating their own designs. Many times, designing your own marketing materials when you launch your businesses – rather than having them professionally created, can make getting those initial clients more difficult, and may work against your business’ success.

Design Inspiration – Where To Turn?
Posted in: Blog, Branding & Design, Web Design by Nick on August 16, 2009 | No Comments
Creative block is horrible. Facing a project or deadline, without a clear mental vision of your project is one of the most frustrating feelings you can experience as a designer. Creative Block is like a black hole in the middle of your day, collapsing on all of your time and process.
At these times, this is usually when I walk the dogs through my small town. There are many small shops and restaurants, with unique antiques and trinkets. One shop had a set of old typesetting blocks from a printshop. Looking at these, I found myself thinking of a usable idea for a logo project on which I was feeling quite lost.
Where do you turn for inspiration? Have you found ideas in unusual places? Most of us turn to online sources, where we can find stories like this one, with examples of others’ inspiration, to help us along our way. I found an excellent listing of online resources for Design Inspiration when I was last in this position, and thought I’d share!
Hopefully, one or all of these will bring you a glimmer of hope. If all else fails, get a dog and walk….

Don’t limit your Web Design to “Web-Safe Fonts” – Get Cufón!
Posted in: Blog, Web Tools & Tricks by Nick on July 22, 2009 | No Comments
Have you ever chosen the perfect font for your site, and realized that it wouldn’t be a “Web-safe” font? Your options have been limited to creating image files for your headers, or using a tool like sIFR (or Scalable Inman Flash Replacement) to replace text elements onscreen with Flash equivalents. That is a workable, proper solution, but it can be quite tricky to set up and use.
Now there is an alternative! Cufón aims to be a worthy alternative to these options. Cufón is a process of taking a font file (TTF, OTF, PFB) and converting it into VML as saving it as Javascript. Without using Flash or images, Cufon can dynamically render type in any typeface you choose.
- No plug-ins required – it can only use features natively supported by the client
- Compatibility – it has to work on every major browser on the market
- Ease of use – no or near-zero configuration needed for standard use cases
- Speed – it has to be fast, even for sufficiently large amounts of text

Some Basic CSS Tricks
Posted in: Blog, CSS Tips by Nick on July 21, 2009 | No Comments
1. CSS font shorthand rule
When styling fonts with CSS you may be doing this:
font-weight: bold;
font-style: italic;
font-variant: small-caps;
font-size: 1em;
line-height: 1.5em;
font-family: verdana,sans-serif
There’s no need though as you can use this CSS shorthand property:
font: bold italic small-caps 1em/1.5em verdana,sans-serif
Much better! Just a few of words of warning: This CSS shorthand version will only work if you’re specifying both the font-size and the font-family. The font-family command must always be at the very end of this shorthand command, and font-size must come directly before this. Also, if you don’t specify the font-weight, font-style, or font-variant then these values will automatically default to a value of normal, so do bear this in mind too.
